The Inspiration for Mickey Mouse?
A Performo Toy "Micky Mouse" like the one pictured to the right recently sold at Heritage Auctions for $2,400.00. According to their catalogue, "Pre-Disney Performo Poseable Wooden Toy (Performo Toy Company, c. 1926). Mickey Mouse made his first public appearance on November 18, 1928 with the premiere of Steamboat Willie. Or did he? On August 17, 1926, Performo Toy Company received a patent for their new toy, named 'Micky Mouse.' The posable wooden toy was very popular, particularly around 1928, and especially in New York City (where its distributor was located). Coincidentally, Walt Disney took a trip to New York City in 1928, and on his train ride home to California, he had an epiphany. On this trip, Walt came up with the idea for his new star, Mickey Mouse. Thus began a decades-long debate: Did Walt Disney use Performo's Micky Mouse as inspiration for his new cartoon star, or perhaps even copy the toy mouse? Predating Disney's Mickey, this rare toy bears remarkable similarities to the beloved Mickey Mouse. The figure has the same red, white, and black color scheme, including a white-colored face. The toy's spherical hands and flat, rectangular feet also look remarkably similar to Disney's first sketches of Mickey. By 1931, Disney's Mickey Mouse had spiked in popularity, and Disney filed a lawsuit against Performo Toy Company. As a result, Performo was required to entirely cease production of their Micky Mouse, as well as destroy all existing stock and even catalogs depicting the wooden mouse. This lawsuit put Performo out of business, with Micky's production ending in less than 5 years and Performo closing down after only 6 years. Because of this, the toys that were already sold are the only thing left of Performo's Micky. This marvelous, rare toy is composed of wood, with the arms, legs, and tail being made of poseable cord. The toy measures about 4.5" tall. Micky's name is printed on a sticker on the front of his torso."
